I have never been a fan of poor hygiene, I can’t stand body odour or sweat so when I workout I shower twice a day and my washing machines is on as often as my kettle. My experience of using deodorant has always been to shower, shave my armpit hair and then shake and spray an anti-perspirent onto my underarm from a can held several inches away. If you spray too far away it goes all over your arms, but too close and you get a freeze burn and it stings your skin; after shaving anti-perspirant makes my under arm red and sore and presses off onto my clothes which more than often stains. A can of deodorant is a fairly bulky item to fit into a handbag, for not a lot of content that has to be reapplied throughout the day. It is unfortunately the necessary evil of deodorants that we’ve all come to expect.

The Forever Living Aloe Ever-Shield Deodorant Stick prides itself on containing no aluminium salts, which is a toxic metal that can effect the central nervous system and disrupt the calcium status of the body, leading to high blood calcium through parathyroid gland activity widely used in deodorants. It claims to not stain clothes, is gentle enough to be applied directly after shaving and waxing, and a convenient size and form to minimise wastage whilst being long lasting and giving all day protection. It certainly sounds impressive, but how will it fare when put to the test? To the bathroom!

On first impressions the thought of using a stick doesn’t seem as hygienic as a single spray of product for the fact that you have to rub it into your under arm and then reuse it again after. But on the same hand, thinking about it logically, you always wash your armpits first to ensure they’re clean before applying deodorant as it’s a protection against odour and soap is the cleanser, so it wouldn’t get dirty anyway.

Removing the lid of the slim Aloe Ever-Shield stick, I was pleasantly greeted by the naturally refreshing scent of witch-hazel, olive leaf, aloe vera, honeysuckle and root extracts which are clean, bright and neutral enough to wear alone for protection or teamed with a perfume without the risk of clashing fragrances like other chemically scented deodorants. The stick itself is a translucent pale cream colour with tiny glossy pockets of ingredients visibly gathered throughout. It is similar in density to a bar of soap but visibly juicy with moisture, as beads of aloe rest naturally on the wax-like surface. After washing and shaving my underarms the Ever-Shield stick glided effortlessly across my skin in a single smooth stroke that I didn’t have to encourage or create excessive friction to stimulate. It didn’t sting my freshly shaved skin and has left my underarms feeling moisturised, soothed and fresh. If anything I’ve had to stop myself from getting too carried away and running the stick across my arms and shoulders too for how luxurious it feels. It leaves no colour or excess residue on the skin, it doesn’t clot or gather no matter how much you apply, and my skin feels soothed and moisturised without being tacky or rubbing off. It’s a delight to wear and leaves me feeling protected and fresh. And because it’s a stick the use that it can give outweighs the shelf life of any ordinary aerosol a million times over, so that’s a thumbs up for eco-friendliness too. For always being an anti-perspirent wearer, I have been effortlessly converted to the Aloe Ever-Shield stick for its convenience, ingredients and protection!
