Whitethorn Fields Mediclinic Dermal Lip Filler

Having already had my teeth straightened and whitened and my lips tattoo’d with a SPMU lipblush to create natural volume and definition I’m now ready to have fillers to add plumpness to my lips. I’ve always had a fine and pale upper lip which lacks shape and volume especially around the cupids bow which is why temporary lip fillers appeal to me. I’ve been coming to Whitethorn Field’s Mediclinic for a number of years now for cosmetic procedures and this is my first time having top and bottom dermal lip fillers which I welcome you to join me as I have my treatment.

My one hour appointment began in a bright and airy consultation room with Aesthetic Nurse Nikki Zanna where I was given all of the advice and information required to decide how best to achieve the results I was hoping for. It was also a valuable time for me to ask questions and clear up any myths and concerns surrounding the procedure. Using her iPad Nikki first called up my client details, medical history and previous procedures so that she had a full indication of my health as well as asking me if I was on any medication, had any pain or discomfort or suffered from coldsores as this procedure can cause an outbreak so it’s useful to apply creams to prevent it. Thankfully I don’t suffer from coldsores, am only taking iron supplements to balance my vegan diet and felt fit and well prior to having the procedure.

Nikki then took some before photos of my lips to add to my file before asking me what I’d like to achieve from my treatment. I pointed out the difference in the size of my lips and how I felt that my top lip was much thinner than my bottom to which she assured me it’s perfectly normal and how we’re supposed to look. Lip fillers shouldn’t make your lips the same size but rather enhance what you already have, adding volume and fullness in a naturally subtle way.

Nikki advised the best filler to suit my needs is a 1ml needle of Belotero Intense to my top and bottom lip which is an FDA approved, Aesthetic Award’s winning dermal filler used to replace lost volume to the skin and should last between six to nine months before naturally draining away and my lips returning to their normal size. Made from Hyaluronic Acid which is our body’s natural moisturiser that diminishes with age, the filler safely rehydrates and plumps up the skin tissue for a gentle flawless finish and can also be used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles to the face. Due to its natural composition this filler is virtually undetectable as you can’t feel it under the skin and it doesn’t go hard or lumpy. It also contains an aesthetic which numbs the lip as the filler is injected making the procedure more comfortable.

The results are immediate and I am able to resume my usual activities as soon as I leave but must avoid extreme heat such as using sunbeds and saunas for the first two weeks along with any lasering, chemical peels, waxing and facials to my mouth in order to allow it to properly heal and settle. The first six hours after my treatment I should avoid touching my lips with unclean hands in order to avoid infection and overnight the pin pricks from the needles will close over. As the filler is a natural component of the body there is very little risk of having an allergic reaction to it but needle and injection related symptoms include redness to the skin, swelling, itching, bruising and tenderness which can be soothed with an ice pack if required and should resolve without further action within 48hrs.

Typically most patients have a follow up treatment every six to twelve months in order to maintain a natural fullness to the lips with results varying between individuals. My main concerns prior to treatment are: Will it hurt? Will I bruise? And will it suit me? Nikki patiently answered all of my questions by showing me before and after photos of her clients who have had the exact same procedure so that I knew what to expect and it really put my mind at ease as I was relieved at how natural they all looked, like when you question if a celebrity has had a secret surgery or if they’re just genetically perfect. She then applied a local aesthetic cream to my lips called Lidocaine which numbed my skin completely and advised that the filler also contained the same ingredients to make the procedure as gentle as possible. As with all needle procedures it’s likely to cause bruising as it’s the luck of the draw if you catch a blood vessel or not and this isn’t something that can be prevented but can be covered with makeup after healing and will fade away within a few days anyway.

Happy with the consultation I then read and signed the consent form before being led into the treatment room so that the procedure could begin. Lying back on the bed I watched as Nikki washed her hands, put on surgical gloves and prepared the needle and swabs on a medical trolley beside me. I was instructed to tilt my head back slightly and allow my mouth to naturally fall open as I relaxed my lips which were entirely numb. Nikki began by outlining the border of my lips with filler to add definition and proportion before injecting into the body of the lip for fullness and volume. If I told you I didn’t feel a thing you probably wouldn’t believe me as I know there’s an irrational fear surrounding needles to the face, especially somewhere as sensitive as the lips but I really had no sensation. Looking up at the ceiling to avoid the bright light my main concern was to remain still so that Nikki could perform the treatment uninterrupted but as I couldn’t feel my lips I couldn’t even tell if my mouth was open. It was all very relaxing, calm and easy on my behalf and made a nice break from rushing around after the children.

Nikki explained the procedure to me as she went, advising that she was pushing the needle into and along my lipline so that she could slowly inject fine linear threads of filler as she drew the needle back out which would prevent any lumps and bumps from filler balling up in one area. I was able to talk and ask questions each time that she removed the needle as a gauze compress was held onto my lip for a few seconds to stem the bleeding from each needle prick which is entirely normal and no different to pricking your finger – only minus the sensation of course! The most tender part of the treatment is said to be at the cupid’s bow which is the little ‘m’ shape at the centre of the top lip but as you’ll see in the video I was completely comfortable and didn’t so much as flinch thanks to the local aesthetic.

The filler treatment itself took just a handful of minutes and after my lips were cleansed to remove any blood I held an ice compress in place for a couple of minutes as Nikki discarded the equipment. I then had a moisturising gel applied and was given an aftercare sheet ready to return home with. I have no symptoms following my treatment and escaped any bruising, tenderness, itching or sensitivity with my lips feeling calm, natural and surprisingly normal; they’re not plasticky, hard or tight like I thought they might be and my apprehension beforehand about it being painful was entirely unnecessary. I love my new lip fillers and literally can’t stop smiling now. Overall it was a wonderful procedure performed by a true professional with naturally flawless results that will now see me through to next year – if only everything in life could be this straightforward!
