Choose a Colour Palette

The classic minimalist look relies on a limited colour palette; usually, they are made up of neutral colours such as grey, white, certain shades of blue, and black. This serves several functions for the home’s interior style, and it’s a good place to start when minimising your home.

Walls are easy to paint; you can even create an accent wall in a day to kick things off. Following this, you’ll want to think about the colour of some furniture items and units to juxtaposed the minimalist aesthetic. Minimalism helps to make your home seems bigger – it’s also amazing for your wellbeing.

Make Empty Spaces

People without a minimalist eye tend to fill things up; they don’t like to see an empty space on a wall or floor; it seems unfurnished and uninviting. But this is a minimalist’s dream. Minimalists love to see blank spaces everywhere because it means things are neat and ordered – everything has its place.

Try to make your home feel light, airy and clutter-free by clearing out cupboards and finding neat places for those items you don’t use often. In terms of wall art, keep this to a minimum, too, unless you see a piece that really rocks.

Furniture That Fits

The trouble with making your home minimalist is that often the furniture available to you doesn’t fit in your rooms the way you’d like: the wardrobe is awkward, the table doesn’t appeal, and the sofa couldn’t be less minimal if it tried. Don’t despair; there are easy solutions to this problem.

Take the wardrobe, for instance; most people have the standard standing wardrobe that sits in the corner, but it isn’t very minimalist, and who what to look at wardrobe anyway. It’s much better to have one fitted into your walls, so it slides open. These made to measure wardrobes save space and look minimal anywhere.

Multi-purpose Furniture

One of the enemies of minimalism is clutter, and your choice of furniture can support clutter or deter it. Think of your coffee table; chances are this is clutter as you read this; it has a book on it, a remote control, a child’s toy, or a couple of mugs. Where should these items go, though? That’s the trouble.

Often, making your home minimalist requires a little bit of investment. You might want to buy an Ottoman, for instance. This is an excellent choice because it allows you to store all of those random items inside it and out of sight.

Everything Serves a Purpose

If you’re a minimalist, you probably have a minimalist personality. You’ve probably always loved organising things and matching them up, right? That’s part of the fun of being a minimalist; you can put a ring on your natural personality and make it into a lifestyle.

So what does this mean in practice? Firstly, you can look around your home and think about the habits of you and your family. Is there a place where people always charge phones? Find a vase nearby and put the relevant charges in it. The same goes for everything else.

Declutter

Clutter, clutter, clutter, clutter everywhere. It seems like you’ve only just cleared things up, and there’s that stuff again, all over the place. It’s a never-ending job, a bit like shovelling snow off the path as it continues to fall. Solving the problem of clutter is the best way to lead a minimalist lifestyle.

Let’s say you have a worktop in the kitchen that’s very cluttered. There’s spices and packets of food everywhere and no room for the toaster. Think about the cause of the clutter? It’s probably down to a jam-packed cupboard – so that’s the best place to start.

Furniture Designs

When you close your eyes and think of the word “minimalism”, what do you think of? Chances are you bring clean lines to mind and solid colours. The Scandanavians are pioneers of this style, and when it comes to furniture designs and colours, it’s good to look in that direction.

Minimalist furniture designs often use straight lines and curves with solid neutral colours; these designs are the best way to create minimalist space, light, and angles in your home. Have fun!
