Chimichanga Tex-Mex Restaurant Amersham

Being a lifelong vegetarian I have an absolute love for food. Spice, texture, flavour and heat just blow my mind and I’m a Mexican addict. Somehow I’ve never eaten at Chimichanga’s before, despite the Amersham restaurant being just a short drive from my home. I literally dribbled in anticipation of the flavour sensation as I popped by at the weekend for a spot of lunch.

The Chimichanga Tex Mex restaurants menu is based upon a Texan Grill with tender ribs, succulent burgers and juicy steaks; fused with a Mexican Kitchen serving burritos, paella, fajitas, enchiladas along with cocktails, beers, wine and other treats. The Amersham restaurant is located in the centre of historic Old Amersham in the Chiltern Hills, surrounded by small independent retail shops in a quaint high street of cobbles and oak beamed period buildings in a sleepy market town. I was able to park for free along the high street, and there’s also a public car park next door. Upon entering the beautiful listed building I was greeted by a flash of contemporary Tex Mex with natural wood panelling, red upholstered chairs, splashes of green, orange and yellow across the walls and pretty displays of sombreros, beer bottles and trinkets with delicious bottles of hot and spicy sauce luring me to my table.

Rather than have a starter, main and dessert I rather greedily chose two starters and a main because I loved the vegetarian choices on the menu so much that I couldn’t decide on just one. So I began my meal with the Jalapeño Bullets for £5.75 and Nachos for £5.85. The jalapeño bullets are fried jalapeño peppers that are packed with cream cheese on a chipotle chilli sauce with a sour cream and chive topping. The breadcrumb coating was light, crisp and crunchy which cracked open to reveal the crumbling smooth cream cheese. The chipotle chilli sauce was sweet and tomato based, balancing out the pang of the chilli and adding a nice little punch to the soft cheese, with the crisp green chives and smooth sour cream finishing it with a cooling freshness. An absolute taste and texture extravaganza.

The nachos came baking hot on a sheet of paper with the thick corn tortilla chips topped with melted jack cheese, fresh salsa, jalapeños, fresh guacamole and sour cream. I have a complete weakness for tortillas and find it annoying how some can be, thin and hard, greasy or over salty, but these were just to my liking, thick yet light, crisp without being dry and lightly salted leaving you wanting more without the need to drink a gallon of water to quench your thirst. The jack cheese was gooey and nicely rich with juicy sweet tomato salsa, creamy thick avocados, generous slices of jalapeño peppers and a cooling drizzle of smooth sour cream. I love the charred corners of the tortillas that crack as you bite into them, with the squishiness of cheese and thick and creamy guacamole and sauce. From hot to cool, rich to mild and smooth to crunchy, every mouthful was a treat.

I followed my giant double starter with the vegetarian enchilada for £10.75 and it was absolutely huge. Part of the Mex Kitchen Classics menu, the rolled flour tortilla came filled with a veggie bean chilli, black beans and spice rice with sautéed peppers and onions. Topped with chipotle chilli sauce and jack cheese it’s baked and served in a skillet and drizzled with sour cream. And being the texture veggie that I am, I ooh’d and ahh’d my way through each mouthful, cracking my fork through the crisp flour tortilla and bubbling cheese to reveal the steaming hot chilli beans and rice within. The sweet peppers and onions sizzling in the bottom of the skillet were juicy and uplifting and the chipotle chilli sauce gave a great kick.

From start to finish each dish arrived quickly, piping hot and absolutely delicious. I think I’ve just found a new favourite in Chimichanga’s to add to my Mexican fix list! The price was incredibly reasonable as all three dishes totalled just £22.35 and the staff were friendly, fast and helpful. The restaurant was easily accessible and family friendly and I’m already drooling over the thought of going back.
