The Coal Grill & Bar, Milton Keynes

After a spot of shopping in the Milton Keynes Xscape building we decided to stop off for some dinner before making the hours drive home. A beautiful fire pit in a restaurant front instantly drew me in like a moth to the flame, and I was suddenly intoxicated with the sensational smell of Mexican food and the enchanting candlelit bar of the Coal Grill & Bar.

We were greeted by a friendly member of waiting staff at the door and shown to a table right next to the beautiful fire pit; surrounded by rustic textures of various natural woods, log piles, quirky wine bottle wall features, suspended industrial lighting, pastel shades and fresh flowers. The music was eclectic and the soft muted lighting created the most amazingly cosy and inviting atmosphere.

Stone Baked Garlic Pizza Bread Half Topped With Melted Cheese And Caramelised Onions

For starters we shared a £5.25 stone baked garlic pizza bread, half topped with melted cheese and caramelised onions, as we couldn’t eat a whole one each and the waiter suggested we could divide it up which was really helpful. My half had caramelised onions added to the top and my friend had their side plain. The bread was sumptuously fluffy and savoury, with a crisp edge to the lightly oiled dough with delicious fresh garlic and sweet onion that made my taste buds sing. Being a vegetarian I am a huge fan of goats cheese and caramelised onions, and the garlic worked fabulously with it; the thin based, stone baked bread goes down incredibly easily and I happily helped myself to an extra slice of my friends plain half after finishing mine. Drool.

Vegetarian House Fajitas Served On A Hot Skillet

For my main I chose the vegetarian house fajitas served on a hot skillet with mixed peppers, chillies, onions and garlic with flour tortillas, spicy salsa, grated cheese, guacamole and sour cream for £9.25. I have never had Mexican food out before, so this was an entirely new experience for me. We don’t have any Mexican restaurants local to us in Aylesbury, Bucks, and I’ve never tried to cook Mexican at home. I guess the closest I’ve ever got to a Mexican meal is a bag of Doritios and tub of hot salsa dip with a DVD and an evening in on the sofa.

I Enjoyed Making Up My Fajitas

I Enjoyed Making Up My Fajitas

Opening the bamboo basket housing my soft fajita wraps, I lay one on my plate and began spooning ingredients from off of the hot skillet that was held on a wooden board. Tantalisingly I built up layers of juicy sweet peppers, a kick of hot chillies, sweet spicy salsa, smooth fruity guacamole, cool sour cream and a sprinkle of grated cheese to top. I then folded over and wrapped up my fajita with both hands before taking a bite, closing my eyes and drifting away to veggie heaven. I ooh’d and ahh’d with each and every delicious bite as the flavours mixed and danced across my tongue, what an amazing and tantalising combination of sweet and sour, hot and cold, juicy and savoury it was. Occasionally between bites of my self-made fajita wrap, I took a nibble of a crisp and crunchy tortilla dipped in the spicy salsa, and it changed the dynamics of taste and texture entirely again.

Munching my way through the several wraps in the basket, at one point I almost thought I wouldn’t be able to finish such a generous portion, but thankfully I did as I didn’t want to waste a single bite. I then washed my food down with a cool glass of apple juice and ice for £3.00, taking the total cost of my dinner to just £17.50. I would have loved to have had a dessert but I was so full up I couldn’t possibly fit it in. For my first Mexican dining experience I absolutely loved it and I’m drooling writing my blog right now. I wish that I lived closer to Milton Keynes so that I could eat there more often and will no doubt be sure to stop by again next time I venture out to the city.
