We came for Sunday lunch a little after three o’clock and were greeted by the friendly bar staff who showed us to a table before coming to take our order. We sat by the window opposite a huge calvary of roast beef, turkey or chicken, scrumpy roast potatoes, huge fluffy Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, a selection of vegetables and gravy that you can help yourself to, with the meats cut and served by the chef. Being vegetarian I decided to order off of the main menu and the Goan Sweet Potato Curry cooked with onions, garlic, chilli and coconut cream, served with rice and a mini naan bread for £7.65 caught my eye.

Goan Sweet Potato Curry With White Rice & Naan Bread

I am a huge curry fan and love the mix of heat, spice and creamy coconut in a thick tomato based sauce, which teamed with white rice and a naan bread was surprisingly filling. I’d never tried a Goan curry before and will most definitely have it again if I see it on a menu as it had a great texture, with a perfect balance of creamy juicy flavours and succulent pieces of sweet potato. Yum!

With just enough room for afters I umm’d and ahh’d over the tantalising menu of waffles, ice cream, pies, cakes and pudding, finally settling on the Sticky Toffee Pudding served hot with dairy vanilla ice cream or custard for £3.75. Being the pudding junkie that I am, and with a tooth sweeter than a cub scout I couldn’t decide between the ice cream, custard or cream side so I asked for all three, with the waitress advising it would cost a little extra, but in my eyes it was well worth it! When the hot sticky, sweet and gooey pudding came out, the cold ice cream, hot custard and smooth runny cream swirled and marbled across my plate; mixing with the sticky sauce and complimenting the light sponge a treat. I’m drooling just writing this now because it was absolutely epic and I highly recommend it.

After out meal the chef came over to say hello and see for himself the first person to ever order three sides with their dessert and I laughed sheepishly. He was warm and welcoming and asked if we enjoyed our food, which was a perfect Sunday lunch out. I told him that I’m vegetarian and would have loved to try the roast another time, but the curry caught my eye, and he advised if we book in advance they can cater for a vegetarian option of nut roast so that I can have it, as it isn’t listed on the menu. I washed down my mountain of delightful food with a large glass of house rose wine, making the total cost of lunch just under £20.00! What a bargain.
