Fitbit Flex Wireless Activity And Sleep Wristband

I received the Fitbit Flex Wireless Activity And Sleep Wristband in black as an early Christmas present and hadn’t seen anything like it before. As a single parent of two young children I like to keep healthy and active, and in times when I don’t get to do a workout I try to keep myself as busy as possible. Everyday life is a rush, so trying to eat healthy, drink enough fluids and get enough sleep is a juggling act in itself. I tend to pick on food constantly, I don’t drink as much water as I should and I never seem to get to bed in any kind of a routine so my sleep pattern is all over the place.

Behold the Fitbit, here’s what Fitbit have to say about it; “This slim, stylish device is with you all the time. During the day, it tracks steps, distance, and calories burned. At night, it tracks your sleep quality and wakes you silently in the morning. Just check out the lights to see how you stack up against your personal goal. It’s the motivation you need to get out and be more active.”

And here’s what Argos who stock it say; “Flex is your perfect companion, wear it on your wrist and it will track all of your activity. You can set goals, sleep trends, log food, workouts, and more. And like with all Fitbit trackers, you can earn badges, connect with friends to share and compete for extra encouragement and check out how you stack up against your goals.”

Unwrapping the Fitbit Flex from it’s clear plastic box felt like taking jewellery from a display case. It came with a small leaflet, usb charger, the black band and the Flex tracker which is minimal, concise and compact. After plugging it into the charger for half an hour for the first initial charge, the smooth tracker slips into the matte black band and adjusts to fit onto the wrist with a stylish metal squircle. Much like wearing a rubber bracelet or watch, the Fitbit Flex is sylish, comfortable to wear and can stay on in the shower, when you workout and even when you sleep. It doesn’t catch or knock and isn’t bulky at all, I place it on my non-dominant wrist, which is my left wrist, just as I would a watch and I generally forget that it’s there. It fits nicely under sleeves and as it’s black, sleek and stylish it goes with everything I wear. There’s also a choice of different coloured bands which the Fitbit tracker can slot into so you can change the colour to suit your outfit and collect them all.

I’ve been using the Fitbit Flex for almost a week now and instantly I fell in love with it. I’m a person that thrives on numbers, goals, progress and achievements, so having a device that can monitor my health is my idea of heaven. The Flex syncs wirelessly to a free app on my iphone5 which allows the information collected to be displayed in an easy to use and monitor manner. You can set a goal for how active you want to be, track steps, distance and calories burned. It monitors how long and how well you sleep, how many times you wake during the night and when you’re most rested, as well as having a silent alarm that gently vibrates to wake you up so I can get up in the morning without waking up my sleeping baby and the rest of the house.

The battery is incredible and just keeps on going and going, I’ve only ever charged it the once for half an hour when I took it out of the box, it’s been almost a week now and I still have over half battery life which is displayed on the app so I know when to charge it again. I love that it tracks calories as it’s something I’m never too sure on, I look at what I eat and think to myself ‘surely that handful of chocolate buttons can’t be that bad’ or ‘maybe I’ll have a quick sandwich as a snack’ but the calorie checker shows you just how valuable foods are. You can select what you’ve eaten from a drop down list, as well as being able to add new foods and combinations to suit your taste, i.e tea with two sugars and full fat milk. This then provides an accurate measurement of how many calories you’ve consumed, at what time of day and how many you have left in your daily guideline allowance or fitness goal that you can set yourself.

It tracks your weight so that you can see how your diet is progressing, and recommends the best way for you to lose those extra pounds. For me it suggested in order to drop just under a stone of weight I should lower my daily intake of calories, which I could set as easy, medium or hard for the amount that it decreased by, and also to up my activity, so it increased the steps I should take in a day in order to fulfil my goal. There are five lights that appear on the band to indicate your progress, and modes can be operated by tapping the band a set amount of times without the need of the app.

Just by wearing the Flex it reminds me to keep active and do more, and when I reach a goal it vibrates against my wrist and I get so excited, like a dog with it’s bone. It is fantastic motivation to live a healthy diet and lifestyle and the fact that it charts and tracks your progress is a mega appeal for me. I like to compare my results, note how I’ve improved and also see the distance I have left in order to reach my ultimate goal. I’m finding I don’t sit down as much as I normally would, I take more trips up and down the stairs to use the bathroom instead of the downstairs toilet in order to reach my steps, and I feel better in myself for drinking more water and realising how much of everything my body needs each day. It has made me more conscious of my lifestyle and health and I can’t wait to reach my weight loss goal of dropping 10lbs!

The Fitbit Flex costs just £79.99 and can be purchased directly from Fitbit’s official website or from any Argos store. Here’s to a happy healthy lifestyle!
