HD Brows At The Belmore Centre

Every girl knows that the eyebrows are the frame of your face, they have the ability to make you look immaculate or lopsided, well groomed or neglected in the stroke of a hair flick. As a teenager a decade ago it was fashionable to pluck your eyebrows into a thin and narrow line, which left the eyes looking bare, bulbous and pig-like. Where I had over plucked I lost the natural shape of my brows, so when I left them to grow back I had a messy patchy caterpillar on my face. I used an eyebrow pencil to fill in the gaps in my brows and draw on their shape but they were always wonky, uneven and started and finished in completely different places. A year ago I had my eyebrows tattoo’d into place for which they were measured, shaped and drawn on; the only upkeep I have is to pluck any stray hairs that grow outside of the coloured area, leaving my face perfectly balanced and my eyebrows beautifully shaped.

It has become fashionable in recent years to have an arched brow in order to better define the eyes, and as eyebrow tattoo’s typically last up to a year and a half it is approaching the time to retrain my brows. With celebrities like Kim Kardashian and the cast of TOWIE leading in the HD Brow craze, I just had to see what it was all about and get some for myself.

I am hoping to create a bolder more defined look for my brows, I would like to heighten my arch and make them a little longer on the outside edge of the eye. HD Brows claim to transform even the most unruly, over plucked and sparse hairs into a bespoke shape and design that brings out the best of your features and it’s effects have been compared to a mini-facelift for how it opens the eyes and balances the face.

Pulling into the car park of the Belmore Centre which was clearly signposted from the main Stoke Mandeville Hospital road, I was pleasantly greeted by the friendly and welcoming staff at reception before being shown to a beautiful white stone waiting area filled with beauty products, soft lighting and soothing music. A few moments later I was greeted by Shereen, my therapist, and shown to a peaceful, cosy and quiet treatment room upstairs which was furnished with beautiful white and purple materials and sumptuous soft fluffy towels. After answering a few questions about my health concerning the procedure that I was about to have, Shereen showed me to the bed where I laid down, closed my eyes and the one hour appointment began.

After talking about what I would like, together we established that my natural brows are fairly light and I would like to take them a shade darker and lengthen then on the outer edges. I would like a thicker brows that tapers off and a higher arch to give greater definition. A patch test is required prior to treatment and is included in the price. Shereen began by placing a protective sheet across over my chest and cleansing my brows to remove any makeup or product, as well as sanitising my hands as I would need to touch my face during the treatment to hold my eyelids in place later.

Despite having my eyebrows tattoo’d, Shereen advised that she could still work with them to create more defined shape, as she has been asked in the past to create a HD brow that clients have then had tattoo’d into place in order to have semi-permanent results with minimum maintenance. She then mixed the tint paste in a bowl to create the desired shade that I had selected and informed me that four colours were typically available; light brown, medium brown, black and graphite, for which I am having a medium brown.

The HD Brow tint is different to a regular eyebrow tint in the fact that it is put all over the brow and surrounding skin in order to catch hold of and colour the surrounding fine hairs to create greater definition, thickness and length. Instead of a controlled and tidy area of tint, the HD colour is applied all over the area before using a product to remove the tint from the skin and any unnecessary hair once the desired area has been assessed and marked out. This way otherwise unused fine and pale hairs can be included to darken and fill the brow giving a thicker and more defined look. The tint is applied with a small spatula and left for a few minutes to take, before being the excess is wiped off.

The brows are then measured out and marked to shape before the waxing takes place. This way you can see the final length, lift and thickness of the brows and any changes can be made if necessary. The excess hairs are then removed using a warm wax on a cotton bud which is applied below, above and between the brows, smoothed and pull out with a small cloth in a swift motion. Waxing didn’t hurt me as the wax is warm and as the area is rubbed first to adhere the wax to the cloth. It’s far quicker and easier than pulling off a plaster as somebody does it for you, but it did make me twitch at first as I had my eyes closed and waited nervously for the cloth to be pulled away. I was soon smiling with relief when I realised it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, and Shereen talked me through each step and what she was doing so that it put me at ease.

Shereen then explained that after waxing the area is completely smooth, but the rest of the surrounding skin has tiny fine hairs which can cause a ‘tide mark’ look between smooth and soft where they meet, so threading is then used to blend the fine hairs in. Threading involves twisting a string across the face to catch and pull out the fine hairs that tweezers or waxing wouldn’t catch. This is where I had to use my hands to pull my eyelids down and tight so that the skin had enough tension to be able to catch the fine hairs. It didn’t hurt at all but made a funny creaking noise as the string twirled across my skin.

The treatment should be repeated every four to six weeks in order to train the hairs to grow in the desired shape and to keep the colour topped up. You work with your therapist to maintain your brows at home between this time, using a colour palette and techniques to fill in any gaps which will eventually be replaced by hair. A specially sculpted HD pencil and colour palette are then used to fill in the fine strokes of hair that are missing in order to complete the look. As time goes on and the hair is encouraged to regrow, gradually the gaps will disappear and the eyebrows will naturally become thicker, fuller and more defined. Shereen advised that hair cycles begin every four months, so once you have your first HD Brows treatment you have to persist and be patient to get the resuts you desire.
