The Broad Leys Restaurant Aylesbury

When it comes to eating out as a vegan it’s safe to say that I struggle to eat a good meal in a restaurant as I’m often presented with a vegetarian option minus the dairy which is very much the same as having a Sunday roast minus all of the meat and trimmings, well it’s not a Sunday roast then is it? More often than not I avoid commercial high street restaurants with strict set menus and favour the quirky, individual and boutique style dining experiences instead which The Broad Leys in Aylesbury is a fine example of!

Situated on the Wendover Road this 300yr old restaurant and bar has been beautifully renovated to offer historic and contemporary fusion dining. With exposed beams, rustic brick walls, twinkling chandeliers, ornate wallpaper, polished silvers and an open fire it’s opulent atmosphere is the perfect way to while away a lazy Sunday afternoon or spend a candlelit evening with a loved one. I arrived on a busy Sunday lunchtime without booking and was pleased to be quickly seated at a table in the full restaurant and my order taken immediately by polite and efficient staff.

I began my meal with a glass of sparkling elderflower which is refreshing, vibrant and uplifting and makes for a nice non-alcoholic alternative to sparkling wine or champagne. I decided to have just the one course rather than a starter, main and dessert and asked the waitress if there was anything vegan on the menu. She promptly checked with the chef before offering me a selection of dishes that he could adapt and create, it’s always nice to have a competent chef! They all sounded delicious and fit my dietary requirements so I welcomed her to surprise me with whatever the chef wanted to make and was greeted by this delightful vegan platter.

With a selection of crusty multigrain loaf, olive oil and sticky balsamic, red pepper houmous, roast peppers, mixed olives, avocado, sweet potato fries, sun dried tomatoes, baby leaf salad and giant cous cous I was incredibly spoilt for choice and relieved to have an actual vegan meal that wasn’t on the menu but certainly should be. The crunchy sweet potato fries were divine with chilled crisp salad leaves and juicy sweet peppers and humous. The bread was mouthwateringly fluffy and fresh, glossed by the oil and vinegar and lifted with creamy smooth avocado and the fragrant giant cous cous was nicely weighted by the strength of the olives. I literally ohh’d and ahh’d my way through the entire plate and felt wonderfully content and healthy afterwards. A fabulous meal in such stunning surroundings, I highly recommend you take a visit!
