More Than A Makeover: The Mental Health Benefits Of A Hair Appointment

In the endless cycle of work, errands, and to-do lists, it’s easy to view a trip to the hairdresser as just another chore, or perhaps, a simple aesthetic necessity. But for many, the ritual of getting a cut and colour is far more than skin deep; it’s a powerful, non-clinical form of self-care with significant benefits for our mental health.

If you’ve ever walked out of a salon feeling lighter, brighter, and ready to take on the world, you’ve experienced this magic firsthand. So let’s take a closer look at why booking your next hair appointment is truly an investment in your wellbeing…

The Power Of Intentional Self-Care

As a business owner and mother of two, carving out uninterrupted time for myself can feel rather rebellious. A hair appointment forces me to push the pause button on my routine, and for or an hour or two as I’m confined to the hairdressers chair, I switch off my to-do list and simply surrendering to being the recipient of kindness and care.

This act of intentional self-care signals to our brain that we are worthy of attention and prioritisation. And this beautifully mindful break provides the mental rest that is so essential for reducing burnout and replenishing our energy reserves.

The Therapeutic Touch & Sensory Calm

From the moment that we you sink into the hairdressers chair, the sensory experience begins to work its magic. From the warm water to the gentle scalp massage and comforting smells of high-quality products, its such a deeply soothing sensory experience.

Human touch, in a professional and safe context like a salon, can be incredibly therapeutic too. It helps us to release oxytocin, which naturally promotes feelings of relaxation, trust and wellbeing. And the act of a scalp massage literally lowers our heart rate and eases muscle tension.

Boosting Confidence & Identity

Our hair is also a massive part of our personal identity and how we present ourselves to the world. A new cut, a fresh colour, or even just a professional blow-dry can provide an instantaneous boost to self-esteem.

When we feel good about our appearance, we naturally carry ourself with more confidence. This renewed self image can create a positive feedback loop as looking better often leads to feeling better, feeling better increases our motivation and positive social interactions, and increased confidence makes us more resilient in tackling everyday challenges.

This psychological uplift is not vanity; it’s self-efficacy, the belief in one’s ability to succeed in specific situations which we can all benefit from at any age and stage of life.

The Salon As A Social Sanctuary

For many, a trip to the hairdresser is one of the few places that they can engage in low-pressure, supportive social interaction.

  • A Trusted Ear: Hairdressers often become semi-confidantes, sharing small details about life in a non-judgmental, one-on-one setting can be incredibly cathartic. It provides a valuable opportunity to verbalise thoughts or concerns that we may be keeping bottled up and feel unable to express to friends and family.
  • Community Connection: Being in a bustling salon also connects us to the wider world. It combats feelings of loneliness or isolation, which are significant risk factors for poor mental health. We become a part of a shared, positive experience, even if we’re just reading a magazine.

A Symbolic Fresh Start

Whether we’re recovering from a period of stress, going through a breakup, or simply entering a new season of life, a significant change in hair can act as a powerful symbolic gesture.

Cutting off old length or opting for a bold new colour allows us to physically discard the past and embrace the future. It gives us a visible, tangible marker of change, providing a sense of self control and forward momentum when other aspects of life might feel uncertain.

Our next hair appointment shouldn’t be viewed as an expense, but as a crucial tool in our mental wellness toolkit. It’s an intentional act of self-love that provides sensory comfort, social connection and an instant infusion of confidence. So go ahead and book that cut, embrace new colour, and enjoy every therapeutic minute – you deserve it!

Maximus Salon: Thame

Today I had a foiliage, which is a balayage with foils in order to allow for two types of blonde colour which included a high lift and bleach to create the most beautiful sun-kissed look. With one blonde being softer, and the other more harsh, it brings a brightness to the face whilst also adding depth and definition whilst maintaining the regrowth of my natural dark blonde hair.

As my natural hair colour is between a 6-7 on the colour chart, I am technically classified as a dark blonde, but blonde dye is typically too light for my root regrowth and brunette dye is too dark, making balayage the perfect solution for low maintenance natural regrowth. Having dark blonde hair is such a frustrating shade to maintain root regrowth, as I’ve always preferred to go lighter than dark for colour due to my pale skin to avoid looking washed out. Having a balayage allows me to have light ends and dark roots to celebrate the best of both.

Jade advised that around 18% of my hair is turning grey now, for which I’ve noticed a sprinkling of entirely grey strands -as opposed to a block of roots turning grey all at once- and as such, lightening the top of my hair helps to disguise this, along with a root smudge to cover the greys. This involves applying a semi toner to the hair to brighten up the blonde and add shine, making the grey strands appear more like natural blonde and blend in better.

I love how bright, beautiful and healthy my hair feels after having a fresh colour and trim, and with my 38th birthday being just a matter of days away now, I am a woman reborn! When did you last treat yourself to a natural glow up?
