Whilst we meticulously care for our faces, slathering on serums and creams each morning and evening, we often overlook the décolletage, our neck and chest, which show tell-tale sign of ageing. Sun damage, gravity and the natural thinning of skin can lead to wrinkles, crepiness, and sunspots that betray our true age, even when our faces look and feel fantastic.

But fear not! You don’t always need to undergo painful treatments to achieve a more youthful décolletage. With a consistent, targeted routine, you can significantly improve the appearance of this delicate area at home. Let’s take a look at how…
Sun Protection: A Non-Negotiable First Line of Defence
This step cannot be stressed enough, as the décolletage is constantly exposed to UV radiation, which is the primary culprit behind premature ageing.
- Daily SPF 30+: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every single day, rain or shine. Extend it from your jawline down to your cleavage.
- Reapply: If you’re spending extended time outdoors, reapply every two hours, especially after sweating or swimming.
- Protective Clothing: Consider wearing scarves or higher-necked tops when you know you’ll be in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

Gentle Cleansing Is Key
The skin on our neck and chest is thinner and more delicate than our facial skin.
- Mild Cleanser: Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser that won’t strip natural oils. Avoid harsh soaps or scrubs.
- Lukewarm Water: Hot water can be drying, so opt for lukewarm water when cleansing.
- Pat Dry: Instead of rubbing vigorously, gently pat the area dry with a soft towel.
Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!
Well-hydrated skin appears plumper and smoother, diminishing the look of fine lines and crepiness.
- Rich Moisturisers: Look for moisturisers specifically formulated for the neck and chest, or use a rich, emollient facial moisturiser. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerin are excellent for drawing and locking in moisture.
- Apply Generously: Don’t skimp! Apply your moisturiser in upward strokes from your cleavage to your jawline.

Targeted Ingredients for Rejuvenation
Just like your face, your neck and chest can benefit from active anti-ageing ingredients.
- Retinoids (Vitamin A): These are the gold standard for anti-ageing, as they stimulate collagen production, reduce fine lines and improve skin texture.
- Start Slow: Begin with a lower concentration a few times a week and gradually increase the frequency as your skin tolerates it.
- Nighttime Use: Retinoids can increase sun sensitivity, so apply them in the evening.
- Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C brightens skin, fades sunspots, and boosts collagen synthesis. Apply it in the morning to protect against environmental damage.
- Peptides: These amino acid chains signal the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, improving firmness and elasticity.
- AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids): Glycolic acid and lactic acid gently exfoliate, removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, leading to smoother, brighter skin.
- Use Sparingly: Over-exfoliation can cause irritation, so start with a low concentration and use it a few times a week.
The Power of Massage and Exercise
- Upward Strokes: When applying your products, use gentle, upward strokes. This can help to counteract the effects of gravity and stimulate circulation.
- Neck Exercises: Simple exercises can help to strengthen the platysma muscle in the neck, which can improve its overall appearance.
- “Kiss the Ceiling”: Tilt your head back and pucker your lips as if to kiss the ceiling. Hold for 5-10 seconds, repeat 10-15 times.
- “Jaw Jut”: Push your lower jaw forward and hold for 5-10 seconds, repeat 10-15 times.

Consider Your Sleeping Position
Sleeping on your side can cause creases and wrinkles on the chest.
- Back Sleeping: Try to sleep on your back as much as possible to avoid compressing the skin on your décolletage.
- Pillows: Special décolletage pillows are available that can help support the area and prevent creasing.
Like any anti-aging regimen, consistency is key. You won’t see results overnight, but with diligent application of these at-home solutions, you can significantly improve the appearance of your neck and chest over time.
Luma Pulse LED Light Therapy Mask For The Face, Neck & Chest
An advanced at-home beauty solution that I love for rejuvenating my face, neck and chest is the Luma Pulse LED light therapy mask set. Developed based upon NASA’s scientific findings, the lightweight LED face, neck and chest mask uses coloured light therapy to stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, reduce pigmentation, brown spots and scarring to achieve a more radiant and vibrant complexion from the decolletage and beyond

With seven targeted light therapies, each infrared addresses a separate skin concern, with the fully adjustable mask fitting all face shapes and sizes and being suitable for all skin types. Rechargeable and compact, the device can be used for 120mins per full charge, with each session taking just 20mins which slots into my evening routine beautifully.
The masks are made from hypoallergenic medical grade silica gel, making them smooth, soft, comfortable to wear and lightweight. I’ve struggled in the past with heavy stiff masks which dig into my eyes and compress the bridge of my nose and make me feel claustrophobic and tender from the pressure, but this mask is lightyears ahead in comparison – you barely realise you’re even wearing it!
The red light frequency of 620-750 nm stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis, enhancing skin firmness and elasticity for anti-ageing and rejuvenation. Whilst the blue light frequency of 450-495 nm has antibacterial properties to target acne causing bacteria, reduce active acne lesions, control sebum production, minimise inflammation and sooth acne prone skin, breakouts and oily skin types.
The green light frequency of 495-570 nm inhibits melanin production to reduce hyperpigmentation, even the skin tone, diminish age spots and calm irritated skin for a balanced complexion. Yellow light of the frequency 570-590 nm enhances lymphatic flow and the oxygenation of skin cells, reducing redness, soothing sensitive skin and revitalising dull complexions for those with sensitive skin, rosacea or sun damage.

Purple light of the frequency 380-450 nm combines the benefits of red and blue light to accelerate skin healing, along with the cyan light of 490-520 nm targeting sensitive and inflamed skin conditions. Finally the white light of a broad spectrum penetrates deeply into the skin to promote cellular regeneration, improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and enhance overall skin clarity. Whether you opt for a targeted treatment on a set light, or an automated program of all lights in a cycle, you can adapt your LED wavelength and routine to suit your skin type and condition at any given time.
I enjoy using the automated program which runs through all wavelengths as I lay in bed in the evening, listening to soothing music, meditating and unwinding at the end of a long day. By incorporating simple yet powerful steps into our daily routine, we can ensure that our décolletage remains as youthful and radiant as our face, lovingly maintaining a truly harmonious and age-defying appearance. Ladies, remember to give your neck and chest the attention they deserve!
