If there’s one thing that we’ve learned by now, it’s that not all battles happen on a battlefield. Sometimes, the fiercest wars are fought quietly, on the inside, by millions of people each day, whose own bodies have decided to turn against them…

The ASA Foundation, Autoimmune Support & Awareness Foundation, is a powerhouse charity that’s transforming how we view chronic illness, changing individual lives, and making sure that nobody has to fight in the dark.
Supporters, advocates, and autoimmune warriors gathered for the ultimate celebration of community and resilience at the annual ASA Foundation Gala 2026 for a night of pure magic, purpose, inspiration and impact.
What Is The ASA Foundation And Why Was It Founded?
The ASA Foundation is a registered UK charity built on a very simple, yet radical premise: to shatter the isolation of autoimmune and chronic conditions through community, education, and early detection.

The foundation was born out of a stark reality, as millions of people suffer from mysterious, overlapping symptoms, bouncing from doctor to doctor, and feeling entirely dismissed, because autoimmune diseases are notoriously tricky to diagnose.
Asal Shirazi BEM is the founder and CEO of the Autoimmune Support & Awareness Foundation. Having lived with multiple severe autoimmune diseases herself, she created the organisation, alongside comprehensive digital platforms and support tools like the ASAL health application, to help bridge gaps in early diagnosis, symptom tracking and education for those affected by chronic illnesses. In recognition of her ongoing advocacy, medical research interests, and community work, she was awarded a British Empire Medal BEM.

There are over 100 different types of autoimmune diseases, ranging from Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus to Hashimoto’s and Crohn’s, which makes getting a clear diagnosis and answers feel more like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
The ASA Foundation was founded to bridge that gap: to educate the public, empower patients to advocate for themselves, and fund vital pathways toward better care and, ultimately, a cure.

Changing Lives, One Story At A Time
Living with an autoimmune conditions can often feel like an invisible struggle. You might look completely fine on the outside, while on the inside, your immune system is throwing a full-scale riot. This invisibility breeds such incredible loneliness and confusion.
This is where the ASA Foundation changes the game entirely. By connecting individuals, families, and caregivers with a compassionate community and expert guidance, they turn panic into power.

Through their comprehensive educational resources, CPD-accredited courses, and awareness campaigns, they take people from a place of confusion and fear to a place of clarity and control. At the gala, hearing stories from members of the public, healthcare and celebrities whose lives went from “bedridden and bewildered” to “informed and thriving” was a powerful reminder of why this foundation is so desperately needed.
Autoimmune Disease, Explained
To put it simply: our immune system is our body’s home security. Its job is to spot foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses, and destroy them upon contact.
But autoimmune disease occurs when our security guards gets confused and start to attack our own healthy tissues instead. Depending on which part of the body gets caught in this crossfire, we may experience different conditions. When our immune system attacks our joints we face Rheumatoid Arthritis, our thyroid may lead to Hashimoto’s and our skin and organs may present as Lupus.

How Does It Most Commonly Show Up?
Because these conditions can target literally any organ or system in our body, they love to wear disguises. However, there are a few classic warning signs that our immune system is under pressure, which typically presents as:
Crippling, Bone-Deep Fatigue: Not just “I stayed up too late watching Netflix” tired, but “I slept for 10 hours and still feel like I’ve just run a marathon” exhaustion.
Widespread Pain and Stiffness: Aching joints, muscles that feel constantly bruised, or morning stiffness that takes hours to shake off.
Brain Fog: Forgetting words, losing your train of thought mid-sentence, or feeling like your brain is wading through wet cement.
Digestive Drama: Bloating, gut pain, and food intolerances that seem to pop up out of nowhere.
Skin Issues & Flaring: Unexplained rashes, hives, eczema, or sensitivity to the sun.

Being Proactive With Our Health: The Importance Of Blood Testing
Because autoimmune symptoms can overlap, getting a diagnosis often starts with some detective work, for which blood testing is essential. Too often, people are told that their routine bloodwork is normal while they still feel terrible and know that something is wrong.
- Ask for the Specific Markers: A standard Complete Blood Count (CBC) won’t catch autoimmunity. If you suspect something is up, please talk to your doctor about specific panels. Depending on your symptoms, this might include an ANA, Antinuclear Antibody, test as a broad screen, or more targeted markers like ESR and CRP which measure general inflammation, Rheumatoid Factor, or specific thyroid antibodies like TPO.
- Keep a Symptom Diary: Track your fatigue, pain levels, flare-ups and diet for a few weeks before your appointment. Handing your doctor a clear pattern is much more effective than saying, “I feel bad all over.”
- Don’t Accept “Normal” If You Don’t Feel Normal: Normal reference ranges are based on large populations, not necessarily your optimal health. If your results sit at the very edge of the range and you feel dreadful, please push for a referral to a specialist like a rheumatologist or immunologist.

Raising A Glass To The Future
The ASA Foundation Gala wasn’t just a glamorous night to raise vital funds for further services, but a declaration of hope and change for all. It proved that when we bring invisible illnesses into the light, we strip it of its power. By funding education, driving early detection, and building a community where patients are truly heard, the ASA Foundation is rewriting the chronic illness playbook one page at a time.
So here’s to the warriors, the researchers, the advocates, and a future where autoimmune diseases are no longer a mystery. To find out more about the charity’s incredible work, view their educational resources, or support their mission, you can visit the ASA Foundation website here.
