Having previously been inmates at Alcotraz and shipmates aboard the Pirates Of The Hidden Spirit it was only really a matter of time before we became cowboys in the Wild West at the Moonshine Saloon to complete this tremendous trilogy of events!
Moonshine Saloon is an immersive theatre experience combining world-class cocktail drinking with the hustle and bustle of the Wild West and something that we still have jaw-ache from for smiling so much.
With staff flawlessly in character throughout, we stepped through the doors of an East London venue and immediately entered a lively and high-spirited Saloon with the promise of making a fortune in an illicit moonshine smuggling operation at the top of its game.
Based in the city-slicker territory of East London, the local tailor ensures that all guests look like the locals to prevent questioning and unwanted attention from the Sheriff who is desperate for a tip-off about what’s really going on behind closed stable-doors of the Saloon.
Donning a cowboy shirt, neckerchief and hat upon entry, the second we stepped into the Moonshine Saloon we became a part of the story and it’s an experience that really comes alive as family, friends, couples and work-colleagues fill the room with animated laughter and activities that you just don’t get to see everyday.
The idea of this cocktail experience is to sneak your own moonshine into the bar owned by the notorious self-styled King of the Moonshiners, Clyde Cassidy. With the town Sheriff keeping a close eye on Cassidy, the Saloon thrives on new outlaws joining his gang to learn the art of smuggling and supplying illicit liquor during the Great American Frontier. Laughing, cheering, telling jokes and slapping our thighs to yee-haw-inducing country tunes, my boyfriend and I rubbed shoulders with the local’s, played alcohol-fuelled fast-paced card games and were even trusted to sneak off into Cassidy’s notorious Moonshine Distillery which his church-going, God-fearing belle of a wife knew absolutely nothing about.
Sneaking our moonshine to the bartender – in this case a bottle of vodka which I safely stowed in my handbag – we were then presented throughout the evening with a range of very delicious cocktails where every form of alcoholic beverage that you bring is expertly mixed with bitters, syrups, liqueurs and garnishes to make bespoke, contemporary and classic cocktails that had us walking like true cowboys in no time!
Being more than a little tipsy we then had to keep tight-lipped when questioned closely by the Sheriff so as not to expose Cassidy’s secret Moonshine empire which was heartwarmingly hilarious. If you’ve ever been to a comedy night or watched a comedian on TV then you’ll know that heckling is majorly encouraged and makes it all the more fun to test the actors who remain perfectly in character throughout the most questionable responses and requests!
My boyfriend and I had the most fantastic evening, and already knew it would be, having previously been inmates in prison and pirates aboard a ship by the same creators of the Moonshine Saloon. Immersive theatre is an experience that once you’ve tried it for the very first time you won’t be able to resist coming back time and time again.
If you’re looking to try something new, celebrate a special occasion or simply need an excuse to go out and have fun then I couldn’t recommend this more highly. The staff were amazing, the scenery and props so authentic and the atmosphere electric, we were fantastically transported back in time to a new way of life and loved every second of it! If the creators of these events should happen to read this blog then we’d love to see a jungle themed Indiana Jones style evening or an Aladdin’s cave next – please and thank you!
