The steaming coffee cup in your hand, you know the one that kickstarts your morning and fuels your afternoon slump, well it’s more than just a beverage. As the tale goes, around the 9th century AD, Kaldi noticed his goats behaving unusually energetic after nibbling on berries from a particular shrub. News of these “magical” berries eventually reached a local monastery. Initially, the monks disapproved, even throwing the berries into a fire. However, the enticing aroma that arose from the roasting beans led them to retrieve them and experiment further. They discovered that brewing the roasted beans produced a stimulating drink that helped them to stay awake during long hours of prayer.

While the Kaldi story is likely embellished, it points to Ethiopia as the birthplace of coffee. The Coffea arabica plant, the most widely cultivated species today, is indigenous to the highlands of Ethiopia. For centuries, coffee remained within these regions, consumed primarily in its whole fruit form or ground and mixed with animal fat.

The journey of coffee from Ethiopia to the rest of the world began with its spread to Yemen, across the Red Sea. By the 15th century, coffee cultivation flourished in Yemen, and it became deeply integrated into Sufi monastic life, aiding in focus and alertness during religious practices.

More significantly, Yemen saw the emergence of the first true coffee houses, known as “qahveh khaneh.” These weren’t just places to drink coffee; they became vibrant social hubs – centres for intellectual discussion, storytelling and entertainment. Pilgrims returning from Mecca further spread the word and the beans, gradually introducing coffee to other parts of the Middle East.

Conquering Continents: The Global Spread Of Coffee:

For a long time, the Arabs fiercely guarded their coffee cultivation and trade. However, by the 17th century, coffee had begun its journey westward. Smuggled beans found their way to India, and later, Dutch traders played a crucial role in establishing coffee plantations in their colonies, including Java.
