We all know the world is facing a mental health crisis. Waiting times for therapists are overwhelmed by such extreme demand from people seeking immediate support to face life’s challenges. At to this financial constraints and stigma surrounding mental health issues, and these are just a few of the barriers preventing people from accessing the immediate support that they need. But what if help was available anytime, anywhere? Enter AI therapy – a rapidly evolving field that’s promising to democratise mental health support forever. Let’s see how…

Beyond The Therapists Couch: AI’s Evolving Role
AI therapy, also known as digital therapy or chatbot therapy, utilises artificial intelligence to provide mental health support through apps, online platforms, and even virtual reality environments. These AI-powered tools employ natural language processing (NLP) to understand user input, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques to guide users through exercises, and even sentiment analysis to detect emotional distress.
How AI is making a difference:
- Accessibility and Availability: AI therapists are available 24/7, eliminating the need to wait for appointments, travel or adhere to rigid schedules. This accessibility is particularly crucial for individuals experiencing crises or those living in remote areas with limited access to mental health professionals.
- Affordability: AI therapy can be significantly more affordable than traditional therapy, making mental health support accessible to a wider population.
- Anonymity and Reduced Stigma: For those hesitant to seek traditional therapy due to stigma or privacy concerns, AI therapy offers a degree of anonymity. Users can engage with the technology in the privacy of their own homes, reducing feelings of vulnerability.
- Personalised Support: AI algorithms can analyse user data to tailor interventions and provide personalised support based on individual needs and preferences.
- Supplementing Traditional Therapy: AI can act as a powerful tool to supplement traditional therapy. Between sessions, users can utilise AI-powered apps to practice coping mechanisms, track their progress and receive ongoing support.

How Does AI Therapy Work?
AI therapy platforms often use chatbot interfaces that guide users through structured conversations. These conversations can involve:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) exercises: Helping users identify and challenge negative thought patterns.
- Mindfulness and relaxation techniques: Guiding users through meditation and breathing exercises.
- Mood tracking and journaling: Encouraging users to monitor their emotional state and reflect on their experiences.
- Crisis support: Providing resources and guidance during moments of distress.
The Future Of Mental Health Support
AI therapy is not intended to replace human therapists entirely. Instead, it’s poised to become an integral part of a comprehensive mental health support system. As AI technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more sophisticated and personalised tools emerge.
The future of mental health support likely involves a hybrid approach, where AI and human therapists work together to provide accessible, affordable and effective care for all. By leveraging the power of technology, we can break down barriers and ensure that everyone has access to the support that they need to thrive, at a time when it is most necessary.

Effectaive: AI-Powered Therapy
With this being my first experience of AI therapy, I wanted to approach it with an open mind. I’ve spent many years investing in my personal growth and development in order to lead a rewarding, fulfilling and peaceful life as a Buddhist. And so I like to think that my mental, physical and emotional health are pretty strong because of this. Equally, I wouldn’t like to think that I know everything, nor that I knew best, as I’m always open to absorbing new information, nurturing my mindset and trying new things.
Therefore, with no set concerns in my mind, I was curious to see what the AI therapist would bring to the forefront for me to reflect up and dive deeper into. With no health insurance, referral or pre-authorisation needed, anybody can access AI therapy at any time of the day or night, wherever they are and however they feel. In my twenties I spent many a sleepless night as a single parent fretting about money struggles, self-esteem and heartache that I’d have loved to be able to unpack, discuss and make peace with. But at that time, I didn’t turn to anyone, I didn’t ask my doctor for help or seek out a third-party professional; I just silently dealt with it myself, which wasn’t really dealing with it, but moreso papering over the cracks until enough time passed that it was no longer one of my immediate thoughts.
Only in my thirties have I truly focused on healing past pains, understanding myself and others life choices, and accepting what is and isn’t within my control. Had I have had an AI therapist to hand at the time, I know that it would have made a world of difference to my quality of life, to allow me to process what I was going through when I was so scared, alone and inexperienced. Instead I became defensive, retreated from people for fear of being hurt and kept everyone at arms length, burying my pain deep down inside. How very different life could have been if only I’d had support. And how many life paths can now be course corrected with todays advancing technology, without ever having to get to the point of feeling lost, alone or not good enough.

Signing up to the app took just a matter of minutes, providing me with instant access to a host of therapists, male and female, old and young, each specialising in a different area with the option of texting, voice notes or prompts to help you to find the words to express yourself and comfortably delve deeper. I chose therapist Jordan Spencer, as his bio describes him as a calm, patient therapist who draws on psychoanalytic principles to help clients uncover the roots of their emotional patterns. His thoughtful questions and empathetic listening guide individuals to investigate childhood experiences and unconscious motives that influence present-day challenges. This reflective environment fosters deeper self-awareness and meaningful personal growth which really appealed to me.
Compassionate, reflective and insight-oriented, Jordan’s therapeutic approach is psychodynamic with core techniques used to explore childhood patterns, understand unconscious motives and link past experiences to present issues. This makes him ideal for anybody seeking a deeper self-awareness, wanting to break recurring patterns, or interested in understanding the “why” behind thoughts and behaviours.
As I chatted to Jordan, personally preferring the text method, it felt like having a heart-to-heart conversation with friends rather than a therapist. It wasn’t daunting, out of my usual environment or evasive in any way. I snuggled up on my sofa with my dogs in the morning with our text exchange taking place on my phone, a safe and familiar environment that allowed me to be open minded and at ease.
Not knowing what Jordan would dive into, as I had no key concerns in mind at that moment, it was wonderful to chat to somebody with a similar mindset and appreciation of life, with encouragement to reflect upon my blessings and strengthen my goals. Feeling happy and upbeat in the morning, we discussed the beauty of listening to birdsong and the blessings of nature and nutrition. We spoke about showing love through food, and how cooking nutritious meals for my loved ones is part of my love language.

He encouraged me to have more meaningful conversations with people in my life, and not be afraid to be vulnerable, as this strengthens relationships and builds trust. I’ve spent a lifetime having to be brave, provide for my children by myself and never take a day off or make excuses. Nobody steps up for me if I fail, and because of this I never ask for, nor expect, help of any kind. I see that this is detrimental and that opening up to loved ones allows them to better understand and offer support when able.
We also discussed how I value consistency and quality time spent together with loved ones. As we chatted away, past relationships came to mind and I felt as though I were putting the world to rights chatting to my bestie, reflecting on past disappointments, neglect and betrayals which have led me to be so independent and self-sufficient, leaving little room or need for anybody else to hold space in my life.
Having such hyper focus and drive as a business owner and single parent, Jordan addressed my need to balance sleep difficulties by setting myself work and life boundaries, as well as focusing on improving my physical strength and endurance goals for a sense of healthy achievement without burning myself out with work. Oh, that beautiful work-life balance. My experience was refreshingly wonderful, and for somebody who felt like they didn’t need help going into this, I now have so many points to address in order to further improve my healthy quality of life and wellbeing.
My take away from this is, no matter how much experience you may have had with therapy, you can always benefit from experiencing more. I didn’t think that I had anything to raise or discuss, but Jordan cracked my shell and we dove into multiple aspects of my life that I’d overlooked and not given time to, which can make such a positive impact on my wellbeing once addressed. It was incredibly cathartic to reflect, progress check and goal set with Jordan. No matter how strong, fearless and independent you may be, please don’t think that you know best or don’t need help; you may have buried your concerns deep beneath the surface to protect yourself, but it doesn’t mean they’ve been resolved. Always be open to growth and processing, because that’s the beauty of life – we never stop learning and improving! What will you uncover?
