I have to confess to purchasing many a pair of flip-flops with nasty hard soles, no support and uncomfortable straps that rub between the toes and leave you clawing your foot as you walk, simply because they look pretty and you can pick them up for as little as a few pounds from literally everywhere. That was until I discovered Birkenstock. Founded in Germany in 1774, Birkenstock is the creme de la creme of smart to formal daywear sandals, with a range of footwear designed specifically for comfort, support and style and as soon as I slipped my toes into the Birkibuc Gizeh I became a Birken convert.
Wow. Just wow. These are the most comfortable sandals I have ever worn and I have no idea where they have been all my life. They literally hold my feet like a second skin and despite walking up and down hills, across roads, grass and mud alike, they didn’t slip from my foot nor rub at all. Not only do they feel fantastic, but they also allow me to walk so much faster than I do in regular sandals or flip-flops, as they’re just like wearing a pair of trainers but as a lightweight sandal instead, allowing the feet to breathe and show off a pretty pedicure.
The upper y-shaped thong is made from Birkibuc which is a combination of acrylic and polyamide felt fibres, giving a velvety appearance that is soft and smooth to the touch. The adjustable buckle strap has ‘Bireken’ engraved on the metal and allows you to fit the sandal precisely, whilst supporting the foot on a cork and latex footbed that has a pronounced arch support. The anatomic shock-absorbing sole features a deep heel cup and toe box which moulds and shapes to your foot, with a leather lined insole that is flexible, lightweight and incredibly comfortable to wear. The underside is stamped in a wavy repeat patterns with ‘Birk’ on a chunky grooved base for grip and comfort.
Here I am wearing the Gizeh Birko-Flor Nubuck Stone with a RRP of £49.95, this is by far the best sandal I have ever purchased and worth every penny and more. I love the natural earthy tones, textures and contrast between the mocha thong, cork base and soft beige sole. As a brunette I can literally wear these with every outfit, whether doing the school run in three quarter length jeans and a classic white tee, having a summer lunch in a delicate floral dress and oversized bag, or an evening meal in a skirt, blouse and up-do, this timeless classic can carry off every occasion whilst leaving me literally walking on air.
