The Book Without Pictures By BJ Novak

My two children love to read, and despite their bookshelves bursting with every story imaginable, it seems that they come back to just a favourite few to read over time and time again. So what makes for a good book? Certainly one that can captivate the reader, to make you feel emotion whether it be joy, sorrow or thought provoking, and to make you want to pick it back up again the second you put it down. And The Book Without Pictures By BJ Novak did exactly that to my children.

Now children’s books are majorly based on pictures, to set the scene, encourage imagination and break up pages and pages of text to keep the attention of a young audience who rely heavily on visual clues. Yet ,a href=”http://amzn.to/1vN88kc”>The Book Without Pictures does exactly what it says on the tin, on smooth white pages perch font and nothing more, and my children have never enjoyed a book so much as they have this.

A #1 New York Times bestseller, this innovative and wildly funny read-aloud by award-winning humorist and actor B.J. Novak will turn any reader into a comedian, as eyebrows raise, smiles creep across the face and children are utterly captivated by the words which the person reading must say aloud. It is intended for children between the ages of 5-8yrs and my 7yr old daughter Millisent and 2yr old son Gabriele couldn’t get enough of it.

We have the book as a download for which I read each page to the children to a response of giggles, smiles and “Mummy again!” once I’d finished. Containing words such as blork, bluurf, blaggity, glibbity, globbity and a slightly preposterous song about eating ants for breakfast, the cleverly irrelevant and irresistibly silly, The Book with No Pictures is one that tickles all who read it. And that’s exactly what makes a good children’s book!
