In a world that often feels so incredibly rushed and disconnected, the simple act of cooking for yourself and loved ones can be such a sanctuary. When you combine this with the exploration of vegan cuisine, you open up a world of not just delicious food, but also mindfulness and a deeper connection to the gloriously healthy food that you eat. Vegan cookbooks aren’t just collections of cruelty-free recipes; they are invitations to a more conscious and creative way of living as a whole.

The Mindful Kitchen
- Connecting with Values: Choosing a vegan lifestyle often stems from a place of compassion – for animals, the environment and personal health. Cooking from vegan cookbooks allows us to actively participate in these values, making each delicious and uplifting meal a mindful act of alignment too.
- Sensory Exploration: Vegan cooking often emphasises fresh, whole ingredients. The vibrant colours of vegetables, the textures of grains and legumes, and the aromas of herbs and spices invite you to engage all of your senses at once. This mindful approach to ingredients transforms cooking from a chore into a glorious sensory experience.
- Creative Expression: Vegan cuisine is incredibly diverse and allows for endless experimentation. Vegan cookbooks often encourage you to explore new flavours, techniques, and cuisines, fostering creativity and a sense of adventure in the kitchen and beyond.
- Patience and Presence: Many vegan recipes, especially those focusing on whole foods, require a bit more time and attention than convenience food or takeaways. This slower pace can be a welcome contrast to our fast-paced lives, encouraging you to be truly present in the moment and savour every step of the process.

The Beauty of Vegan Cookbooks
- A World of Flavours: Vegan cookbooks showcase the incredible variety of plant-based cuisine. From hearty stews and vibrant salads to decadent desserts and innovative takes on classic dishes, there’s a world of flavours waiting to be discovered.
- Celebrating Whole Foods: Vegan cookbooks often highlight the beauty and versatility of vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes. They inspire you to see these ingredients in totally new ways, transforming them into culinary masterpieces.
- Visual Inspiration: Many vegan cookbooks are beautifully designed, with stunning photography that showcases the vibrant colours and textures of plant-based food. These visuals can be a source of inspiration, encouraging you to create your own beautiful and delicious meals based on the skills that you’ve learned.
- Cultural Exploration: Vegan cookbooks can be a gateway to exploring different cultures and culinary traditions. Many cookbooks feature vegan versions of dishes from all around the world, expanding your palate and your understanding of global cuisine and adventure.

Mildred’s Vegan Restaurants & Cookbooks
I first discovered Mildred’s whilst popping into the city for dinner and instantly fell in love with their delicious dishes. Mildred’s is a chain of quirky vegan restaurants in London, known for its globally inspired menu, lively atmosphere and commitment to plant-based cuisine. The first Mildred’s proudly opened in Soho in 1988 and has since expanded to multiple locations, including Camden, King’s Cross, Covent Garden, Dalston, and Borough Market.
They offer such a mouth-watering range of dishes, from breakfast and brunch to all-day menus, with options for both small plates and main courses alike. After dining in London, I decided to treat myself to their best-selling cookbooks which are bursting with exciting vegan recipes, punchy flavours, exciting new dishes and a dash of urban cool.

Their Hispi Cashew Moilee caught my eye, so I spent a sunny afternoon mindfully making this beautiful recipe at home for my family. I love cauliflower based mains, but have never had a cabbage main before, so had high hopes to embrace this new dish with my favourite flavours of coconut, lime and spice.
The mouth-watering aromas that filled the kitchen had my two teenage children popping up like meerkats, asking what I was making, before enthusiastically joining in to help me to toast the cashew nuts and wash the fresh curry leaves and coriander to garnish. A truly heartfelt and beautiful experience to share this recipe preparation together, which rolled into sharing a delicious new meal and having such joyful and grounding conversations about our day. Food is love, and something that can go far beyond a takeaway or microwave ping. The journey from field to fork, at our family table, is priceless. Now, what’s for dessert?
