Preventative Dentistry: Wisdom Teeth Removal, A Wise Move For All

Wisdom teeth can be a touchy subject for many. Those mysterious third molars that often make a grand appearance in our late teens or early twenties, for some may erupt without a fuss. Whilst for others, they usher in discomfort, crowding and a whole host of other issues. This has led to a common question: even if they aren’t causing trouble now, should everyone have their wisdom teeth removed for the sake of long-term health and hygiene? Let’s delve deeper into this debate as I approach my wisdom teeth removal…

One of the primary arguments for proactive removal centers around hygiene. Situated at the very back of the mouth, wisdom teeth can be notoriously difficult to clean effectively. Their awkward positioning and the presence of surrounding gum tissue can create perfect traps for food particles and bacteria. This can significantly increase the risk of:

  • Cavities: The bristles of a toothbrush struggle to reach the deep grooves and surfaces of wisdom teeth, allowing plaque to accumulate and decay to set in.
  • Gum disease, periodontitis: Inflammation and infection of the gums surrounding the wisdom teeth are common. This can lead to pain, swelling, bleeding and even bone loss in the long run, impacting the health of adjacent teeth.

Beyond hygiene, the potential for future health complications is another key consideration. Even seemingly asymptomatic wisdom teeth can harbor hidden problems:

  • Impaction: Often, there isn’t enough space in the jaw for wisdom teeth to erupt fully and properly. This can lead to impaction, where the tooth becomes trapped beneath the gum line or grows at an angle, potentially damaging neighboring teeth.
  • Cysts and tumors: In rare cases, cysts or even tumors can develop around impacted wisdom teeth. While not always malignant, they can cause significant damage to the jawbone and surrounding structures.
  • Crowding: While the direct link between wisdom teeth and front tooth crowding is debated, some dentists believe their eruption can exert pressure on other teeth, leading to misalignment over time.

Proponents of preventative removal argue that addressing these potential issues before they cause pain or complications can save individuals from more complex and potentially painful procedures down the line. As we age, the roots of wisdom teeth become more developed and the surrounding bone denser, which can make extraction more challenging and increase the risk of complications.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to remove asymptomatic wisdom teeth is a highly personal one that should be made in consultation with your dentist or oral surgeon. They will consider factors such as the position and alignment of your wisdom teeth, the size and shape of your jaw, your age, and your overall oral health. Regular dental check-ups, including X-rays, are crucial for monitoring your wisdom teeth and identifying any potential problems early on.

While the idea of preemptively removing healthy-seeming teeth might seem drastic to some, the potential for future complications and the challenges of maintaining hygiene in the back of the mouth are compelling arguments to consider. By having an informed discussion with your dental professional, you can make the best choice for your long-term oral health and wellbeing.

At the age of 37yrs, I’ve previously had a tooth removed as a child due to overcrowding, and my gums cut to relieve the pressure of my wisdom teeth in my twenties which were struggling to break through and caused me a great deal of discomfort. But for the main part, I leave my wisdom teeth alone and they leave me alone. I visit my dentist once every six months for a routine check-up and had my first and only filling a year ago. I don’t tend to have any issues with my teeth as a whole, and aside from teeth being whitened and straightening with fixed wires, I brush twice per day and lead a healthy active lifestyle with no dental issues.

Preventative Dentistry At Dr Doris

Attending a health check at Dr. Doris Clinic, I was astounded to learn about the health, and status, of my wisdom teeth which had never been on my radar before. Because they do not hurt, I do not even think of them; in understanding the power of prevention as the cornerstone of lasting oral health, Dr Doris’ comprehensive dental services are designed to not only to address immediate concerns but also to maintain and enhance your smile for years to come.

Providing cutting-edge microscopic dentistry, cosmetic porcelain makeovers, specialised care in periodontology, implantology, and TMJ disorder management, they offer a complete range of advanced treatments for patients of all needs. Their expert team also provide oral maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, full mouth reconstruction, and treat difficult problems such as occlusal dysfunction to expertly managed all aspects of dental health under one roof. Their aim is to create beautiful, functional smiles throughout life with precision and care.

Their approach to dental disease is prevention, which begins with an extremely close and thorough dental examination of the teeth, gums and overall oral health. Far exceeding a traditional dental examination, I received an advanced and detailed diagnosis complete with imaging. My dental check began with microscopic imaging to detect the smallest of issues before they can evolve, and are easily missed during a hand and mirror exam.

This was followed by a 3D intraoral scan to provide a complete, detailed view of my entire dentition. The health of each of my teeth can be expertly assessed with this, along with the alignment of my bite to enhance both the health and aesthetics of my smile. Finally, digital radiographs were taken, providing the most comprehensive diagnostic tools with low radiation exposure.

Once my exam was complete, I was given a detailed written report accompanied by high-quality images of my oral health. It offered me such valuable insights into my current dental status, allowing me to have a clear understanding of my results, as well as a reference for tracking any changes that take place over time which is reassuring. To go from thinking my teeth were “ok” at my local dentist checkups, to seeing the true in-depth reality of the health of my teeth for the very first time in this dental check is worlds apart for knowledge and understanding. I’m astounded to learn of the true health of my wisdom teeth which made having them removed such a clear and straight forward decision.

Whilst I understand that doctors, dentists and nurses are all pushed for time and prefer not to overwhelm their patients with jargon and unnecessary medical details, I recognise how important it is to be fully informed in making decisions about preventative care. Had I have known of the health benefits of removing my wisdom teeth sooner, I would undoubtedly have made this decision decades ago, rather than wait for them to fail me or experience symptoms and pain.

Early detection, in all aspects of our health, is key. Utilising advanced technology, the luxury dental check-up’s at Dr Doris allow for the detection and addressing of even the smallest concerns before they ever develop into larger issues. This proactive approach not only helps to maintain oral health, but also prevents costly and extensive treatments in the future. From cavities to gum disease, this extensive examination has left no stone unturned and I know that I’m in the best hands when it comes to preventative care.

With the countdown to my wisdom tooth removal now underway, I’m feeling incredibly positive and informed about my decision, and I hope to share my journey surrounding it with you all here. Remember to check back soon to see how I’m getting on…
