Every fitness bunny knows that it’s important to eat well and fuel your body in order to get the best results from your workout, and natural almond butter is packed full of protein which is fantastic for healthy muscle recovery. Here I’ve made almond butter apples for a delicious post workout snack.
GoNutrition almond butter is made from 100% natural roasted almonds which can be used as a spread or added to shakes and smoothies. The almonds are first roasted in their natural skins then crushed into a smooth paste much like peanut butter only slightly more wet and glossy. Almond butter is high in protein, calorie dense and free from added salt, sugar and oil, meaning it’s packed with vitamins, minerals and healthy unsaturated fatty acids and key to a healthy balanced diet.
This is just a simple thing I put together when scanning the kitchen for what I could add my almond butter to, and I happened to have some sweet apples in my fruit bowl so I thought I’d give them a go. I started by scooping out the cores and spooning in the almond butter. I was planning on oven baking them with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a drizzle of honey, but after licking the spoon and tasting the almond butter I was too hungry to wait! To oven bake the apples simply place them on a tray, wrapped in foil like a jacket potato so that they are fully sealed and can steam until soft. I bake at 180 degrees for around 10 minutes or until a fork can slip through the fruit with ease.
As a raw apple this makes a delicious and refreshing post workout treat because you get the juicy sweet crunch of the flesh mixed with the oily, savoury and creamy paste of the almond butter. I’m a huge fan of peanut butter but it can become a little sweet and sickly when I have too much, which might be a good thing in hindsight as I lack a cut off switch and can easily eat a jar in one sitting with just a spoon! In comparison to peanut butter, the almond butter is much looser and moist, rather than sticky and thick. It also has a hint of saltiness to it, which is why it tastes amazing with fruit.
Priced at just £11.99 from GoNutrition for a 1kg tub, this will literally last me months!
