Good Vibrations: Why Your Health Routine Might Need A Shake-Up

In the fitness world, we’re often told that “no pain, no gain” is the gold standard. But what if I told you that standing still, on a platform vibrating at high frequencies, could be one of the most effective tools for your recovery, bone density and circulation alike?

Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) therapy isn’t just a gimmick from the 1960’s, it’s a science-backed method used by everyone from NASA astronauts to elite athletes. As a bodybuilding mother of two, my life is a constant balancing act of heavy lifting and running around after my two delightful teenagers. I also silently navigate the unique challenges of living with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), low blood pressure and poor circulation that often leaves my hands and feet tingling, if not completely numb.

For me, my vibration plate isn’t just a workout finisher, it’s a therapeutic necessity. So let’s take a closer look at how vibration technology meets our health needs, precisely where we are in life today…

How Vibration Plates Work

When we stand on a vibration plate, the platform beneath us moves at varying frequencies, causing our muscles to contract and relax dozens of times per second. This involuntary muscle activity stimulates blood flow, engages the lymphatic system and strengthens the neuromuscular system without the high impact or risks of traditional cardio.

For The Gym Goer: Performance & Recovery

For athletes and bodybuilders, vibration plates are a secret weapon for hypertrophy and recovery, as performing dynamic movements, such as squats and lunges, combined with vibration increases motor unit recruitment.

For those living with hypermobility, traditional high-impact cardio can damage joints and lead to painful dislocations. The vibration plate allows for muscle activation and proprioception without the joint shearing forces of running on a treadmill or risking twisting an ankle outdoors.

For The Office Worker: Offsetting A Sedentary Lifestyle

If you find yourself spending eight hours a day tethered to a desk, your circulation is likely to take a hit. Just a 10-minute vibration session can act as a mechanical pump for our veins, flushing out the stagnant blood that pools in our legs, whilst waking up a dormant core.

Vibration plates are the ultimate exercise snack, as you don’t even need to leave the house, have a membership or even change into sportswear to reap the lymphatic drainage benefits. You can even put your feet onto the plate whilst sitting down and watching television and still experience multiple health benefits.

For The Retiree: Longevity & Bone Density

As we age, we all know that maintaining our bone mineral density and balance becomes a matter of vital independence. Studies show that WBV can help to combat osteopenia by placing a gentle, consistent load on the skeletal system.

By providing this low-impact way to improve our postural sway, it significantly reduces the risk of trips and falls in later life which is absolutely vital and is a top priority for me as a mother and bodybuilder. I fully intend to live a long and active life, celebrating my children, grandchildren and great-grand children growing up.

My Personal Journey: Numbness, hEDS & Low BP

Living with hEDS hypermobility means that the connective tissue in my body is too stretchy, which often leads to joint instability, rolling ankles, twisting wrists and inconveniently dislocating knuckles from something as simple as picking up a cup or peeling a banana. Meanwhile, my low blood pressure and poor circulation leave me with tingling extremities as a daily occurrence, and I’ve fainted without warning many times, even shockingly when crossing the road.

Before I started using a vibration plate, my hands and feet would turn numb easily when sitting down, going to the toilet or sleeping, and so vibration therapy has been a game-changer for my microcirculation. By stimulating the tiny capillaries in my limbs, it helps to move blood back toward my heart, easing the pins and needles and stopping me from falling over or dropping things from loss of sensation in my thirties.

If you’re like me, and prone to dizziness, the key here is hydration and passive use. You can start by simply sitting on the plate or resting your legs on it while on the floor to get the blood moving before standing up.

Whether you’re looking to shave time off your gym recovery, survive a sedentary lifestyle, or keep your bones strong and stable well in retirement, the vibration plate is an incredibly versatile tool for all. It proves that the best way to move forward is to take life one step at a time.
